Charles "Chick" Young
Chief Executive Officer & Co-founder
Chick Young's resume reads like a virtual "who's who" in technological advances over the past few decades, his career mirroring the landmarks in a changing technological world. The common thread through it all is that Young has played key parts in the genesis of each "next big thing."
Young's career began in aerospace. In the 1960s, he joined the burgeoning world of computer programming, working with NASA on the Saturn Moon Exploration Program. What he enjoyed most about the industry was the challenges of doing something that had never been done, but Young felt this technology could be applied to industries other than computers and aerospace. He first recognized this opportunity in banking.
Young became a partner in Information Processing Corporation ("IPC"),
the parent company that developed the technology for the ATM. After software development, Young recognized the value of an unheard-of business practice, "outsourcing" at a financial processing company called Mtech. Young foresaw the power of sharing innovation and talent between businesses and across industries. Young then replicated his successful idea by co-founding and serving as Chief Operating Officer with Affiliated Computer Systems ("ACS"), which he and his partner took public in the early
1990s.
Success seemed a snap of the fingers for Young. He needed a bigger challenge. He needed an industry hindered by demand, riddled with inefficiencies and under pressure from legislation. He also needed a partner. Young found both - in healthcare and Rick Kneipper.
It was during a serendipitous plane ride in 1991 that Chick Young first met Rick Kneipper. The two later developed an idea to put Young's IT experience and outsourcing success together with Kneipper's business and legal expertise to save hospitals millions of dollars per year while vastly increasing financial efficiency and patient safety. They founded PHNS together in 1999.
As Chairman and CEO of PHNS, Young presides over multi-million dollar contracts and more than 1,400 employees across the country. He and Kneipper, along with other PHNS executive management, are responsible for the strategic direction of the company, as PHNS continues to find new ways to save hospitals dollars while committing themselves and their employees to the improvement of patient care and safety.
What many don't know about Chick Young is that he is also an accomplished musician, at one time playing professionally. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three grown children, playing golf, hunting wild game or hoping for a bite on his fishing pole. That's one task Young doesn't see the need to outsource. |
